Restoration

St. John’s has recently completed plaster restoration and painting in the church entryway and sanctuary.

Stained Glass Windows

One of the most beautiful attributes of the church are the stained glass windows.

St. John’s sponsored a ‘Stained Glass Concert Series’ along with ‘The Sandstone Trust’ providing funding in the past to assist in window restoration.

Tower Painting and Cleanup

In 1856, a cyclone went through Medina. The spire on the top of the church was wrenched from its bearings. The winds then reversed direction and almost set the spire aright. It was decided that the spire wasn’t safe and should be taken down. A copper cupola was erected to hold remaining sandstone in place.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

A bell weighing 2,100 pounds and costing $950 was purchased to hang in the tower in 1869. This bell, bought by the Ladies Sewing Society, was rung for the first time on December 5, 1869. It bears the following inscription: “Come unto me, hear and your soul shall live.” ISA. I. V3.” On the other side is written, “St. John’s Church AD 1869.”
