St.John's Bell Tower with Cupola before being damaged. In 1856, a cyclone went through Medina. The spire on the top of the church was wrenched from its bearings. The winds then reversed direction and almost set the spire arright. It was decided that the spire wasn't safe and should be taken down. A copper cupola was erected to hold remaining sandstone in place.
